Brief: The Yellow Wallpaper (1892)
2021 Digital illustrations
A narrative by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, written from the perspective of an anonymous woman with post natal depression in the 1800's. In response to her mental illness, she is prescribed ‘the rest cure’ whereby she is "forbidden to leave her bed, read, write, sew, talk or feed herself." The rest cure worsens her mental state and she descends into psychosis, obsessed and disturbed by the wallpaper decorating the room she's trapped within.
Within my illustrations I wanted to portray the all encompassing feeling of the wallpaper. Using flat perspective, the wallpaper is the dominating element in the room. As the story continues, its pattern spreads and finally engulfs the women as she tries to escape its grip.
